Menorah in the D
Hanukkah (Chanukah) begins this year when the sun sets on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2025. The eight-day Jewish “festival of lights” runs until sundown Monday, Dec. 22, and many cities across Metro Detroit are celebrating the holiday with various major events.
Here are some of the bigger celebrations:

Every year in downtown Detroit, a 26-foot-tall menorah is lit up in downtown to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Come for the live lighting and enjoy greetings from community leaders and dignitaries, the honoring of eight lamplighters, the Detroit Pistons Extreme Team and complimentary hot soup, snacks and hot chocolate. There will be crafts, games, treats and balloomn animals for children.
