Garlic is a widely used ingredient in various cuisines across the globe. In addition to its culinary uses, garlic has also been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Garlic is a member of the Allium family, which also includes onions and shallots. It contains numerous health-promoting compounds that provide a range of health benefits. Here are some garlic health benefits:
May reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Studies suggest that garlic may help lower blood pressure and reduce LDL cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
Antimicrobial properties. Garlic has been shown to have potent antimicrobial properties that may help protect against bacteria in food.
Anti-inflammatory effects. Some studies suggest garlic has several anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.
May have anticancer properties. While test tube and rodent studies don’t always translate to effects in humans, some studies suggest that garlic may have anticancer properties and may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, such as stomach and colorectal cancer.
While many studies use garlic supplements, extracts and oils, health benefits with culinary uses of garlic have been shown in some observational studies. One epidemiological study that observed 6,000 Chinese men found a reduction in lung cancer risk with regular raw garlic consumption.
