Blood Orange Mock-A-Rita with a Kick

Mocktails are becoming increasingly popular at bars and even in home kitchens as more people are exploring life with no or less alcohol. They can be just as satisfying as their cocktail counterpart if prepared with balanced ingredients. This lower-sugar spin on a spicy margarita uses blood orange to provide mouthfeel elements similar to tequila.

Blood Orange Mock-A-Rita with a Kick — Serves 4

  • Author: Shanthi Appelo

Description

This refreshing and spicy mocktail — made with blood orange, jalapeño, lime juice, simple syrup and lime-flavored sparkling water — is perfect for Cinco de Mayo or any hot summer day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 blood orange, quartered
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced, seeds removed if desired
  • 4 large limes, juiced
  • 6 Tbsp. simple syrup
  • 1 12-ounce can of lime-flavored sparkling water
  • Ice
  • 1 Tbsp. coarse salt for the rim (optional)

Instructions

  1. If a salt rim is desired, rub some lime juice along the rim of the glasses and dip in coarse salt.
  2. Divide jalapeño slices among 4 glasses and press down with a muddler or spoon. Leave the jalapeño slices in there if you desire a spicier drink.
  3. Add ice.
  4. Add the juice of a quarter wedge of blood orange and 1 lime.
  5. Add 1½ tablespoons of simple syrup to each glass and stir well. Adjust sweetness if desired.
  6. Top with lime sparkling water. Cheers!
