How to Stop Snacking This Summer
There are both nutritional and psychological reasons that you may continue to reach for the snacks, chips and crackers or cookies.
Here are two that frequently resonate with my clients:
Your amount of processed or denatured foods has increased.
Summertime typically gets people out of the kitchen and into the pool, beach or great outdoors. Less time is spent preparing foods and more time is spent on the move. This is not necessarily a bad thing at all. But for those who find they are constantly snacking, this may simply point out to the body not receiving adequate whole food nutrition. Processed, packaged snack foods are only part of what was once a whole food. The more processed foods you consumer the more the body spends out signals to search for more food to complete the missed nutritional content
Remedy: Increase the amount of simple whole foods into your diet and monitor any changes in the desire to frequently snack.
You have not learned how to eat in the summer
Although summer is frequently a favorite season for Michiganders, when it comes to food, it can feel like a stressful time. Many people cling to the eating routines that worked for them in fall, winter or spring not realizing that summer may require a whole new way of eating. Quick, easy, fresh and cooling are typically what “works” in the summertime.
Remedy: Let go of the way you think it’s supposed to look. Prep simple salads, boil eggs and prepare large fruit salads ahead of time for easy access.
