How to Get Excited for Winter Exercise

Committing to a regular exercise routine is no small feat at any time of the year, but it can feel a lot tougher when the weather gets cold and you have to bundle up to go on a walk, run or bike ride. Don’t let the temperature stop you! Working out in colder weather doesn’t have to be miserable. Here’s how to actually enjoy your winter exercise so you feel fit and ahead of the game when spring rolls around (and get a jump start on your summer body):

  1. Treat yourself to some new workout gear. Exercising during the winter is all about one thing: layers. Having multiple thinner pieces on can keep you warm and give you options when you start to get hot during the workout (which you will!). And don’t forget the accessories, like running gloves and ear warmers. Another benefit to getting some new winter workout clothes: When you’re wearing workout gear you like, it will make you feel more confident, which could lead to improved focus and motivation during your workout.
  2. Warm up inside first. Experts say warming up inside will make it easier on your body when you exercise outside. Try to take five to 10 minutes before you head outside to do some low impact exercises and get your heart rate up, like jogging in place or doing jumping jacks. While you’re at it, throw your workout clothes in the dryer for a few minutes. It will help you stay warm when you step outside!
  3. Make your workout shorter. Even a 20-minute workout can have positive benefits on your health, so don’t force yourself to stay outside for an hour if you don’t want to.   4. Be your own workout DJ. Have you updated your playlist lately? Now is the time! Studies show making an upbeat playlist can boost your mood, which will make your outdoor workouts a lot more fun. Not a music fan? Listen to a podcast or book to help the time fly by. And know that the good feelings will keep going after you return home: Cardio exercise causes your body to release endorphins, which help you feel happier and fight off those winter blues.

  1. Winter is so long and exercising outside helps to deal with the winter blues. Group runs is an excellent opportunity to make meet other people who enjoy winter running.

  2. I enjoy a good hike/walk in our local metro parks too thanks to frequent outings planning by our Sierra Club meetup group here in SE Michigan!
