5 Gifts to Make Mother’s Day Healthier

HikingMy mom has always been one of the most important people in my life. She packed my lunch, took care of me when I got sick, and was always there for me when I needed her. Mothers are truly incredible people and deserve so much appreciation for the things they do. That’s why this year, I wanted to offer up some Mother’s Day gift ideas for things that actually give back to moms.

Every year I struggle to find something that my mom will genuinely enjoy. This year, though, I have been more successful because I have taken a new aspect into account: health. Instead of buying the usual flowers and chocolates, why not get Mom something that will genuinely benefit her in the long run? Here are a few ideas for healthy gifts for typical Mother’s Day:

  1. A hiking trip: Hiking is a wonderful source of exercise and it’s something the whole family can do together. Spring is now upon us and spending time on one of the many hiking trails in Michigan is a great way to get some family time in while also enjoying the beautiful weather.
  2. Exercise equipment: Weights, an aerobic step bench, or new running shoes can provide encouragement to maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of my favorite ways to exercise is yoga because of the strength and flexibility that can be gained from it; if your mom enjoys it as well, a yoga mat might be a great gift.
  3. Planting a garden: The benefits of this kind of gift are extensive: it can be a group activity, it yields fresh foods, and the gardening process itself is a workout that burns calories. If you have room in your yard for a garden, consider bringing mom on board with this fun gift that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
  4. Pack a picnic: There are countless parks throughout Michigan that are great for picnics and just enjoying nature. Fill a picnic basket with your favorite healthy picnic foods and head out for a relaxing day. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
  5. Spring cleaning: With all the caretaking mom already does for the family, help her out around the house by taking the housework off her shoulders. Clear out some of the clutter and pull out the duster to eliminate the harmful effects of household dust. It will be better for her health as well as your own!

You don’t have to spend lots of money to show your mom you care about her — you can do that simply be encouraging her to maintain good health!

What are you going to do for your mom this Mother’s Day?
