Have You Tried Sandbox Aerobics?

Detroit has a lot of hidden activities around the city. Unknown to many, Campus Martius started a Healthy Moves program. One of the classes offered is the Sand aerobics, which led by Whitney Harrison who graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Kinesiology. This class took place on Saturdays at 10:30 am and was free to anyone.
The class was doable but very intense. We worked out in the sand in Campus Martius. This added to the difficulty. It was a solid hour with roughly five minutes of down time. I am pretty frequent with working out but aerobics is an area that I have seldom visited. She allowed for everyone to comfortably go at their own pace. I decided to keep my pace with the instructor for maximum difficulty. Her words, during the exercises, were more encouraging than demanding, which I believed the participants really appreciated. The atmosphere was very welcoming. Some of the exercise involved two people. This helped break any tensions with working out among strangers. This workout was well worth it. It helped me to understand that I need such variety in my own exercise routine.
I got a chance to speak with Whitney after the class. Her motivations for starting this class were to give back to the community. She believes that anyone, despite income, should be able to have the resources to get fit. She also proclaimed that fitness teaches discipline and strength, both mental and physical. I could feel the passion behind her statement. The back of her business card even reads, “Dedication. Discipline. Focus. Faith.”These drivers are what motivates her to be a part of revitalizing Detroit, as she bases her business around aiding in the rebirth of the city. Although the class over, Whitney is currently searching for a local studio to continue giving back.
This was a great experience and I encourage anyone who is searching for a morning full of fun and fitness to try it.
