How to Get Kids Excited About Brushing their Teeth
Teaching your children to maintain proper oral care by brushing their teeth twice a day can be a challenge. But there are plenty of ways to make them look forward to brushing their teeth and even start to see it as fun! Encourage your kids to try the following activities while brushing their teeth.
Try Simon Says. This is a great game to play with your child while they brush their teeth. You can even clean your own teeth at the same time! Brush your teeth one way and then have your kid mimic your brushing technique. You’ll be surprised how much fun you both are having by the time you put the toothbrushes away.
Have fun with your toothbrush. There are plenty of fun toothbrushes on the market for you to choose from. Let your child pick out a toothbrush with their favorite cartoon or comic book character. You can even let them get involved in choosing the type of toothpaste they want to use so they look forward to brushing with it.
Set goals. Kids love to receive a reward after a job well done. Consider creating a brushing chart to hang on the wall in the bathroom. Reward your kids with a sticker every time they brush their teeth. After they earn a certain amount of stickers, reward them with something they’ll enjoy.
Remember children’s mouths are sensitive and require a small toothbrush with a handle they can easily grip. Make sure the bristles are soft and that you replace the toothbrush every few months. Visit the American Dental Association website to find more tips on oral care for children.
