No Experience Necessary: Summer Sports Everyone Can Do

The months ahead will be filled with warm weather and longer days, making now the perfect time to pick up a new activity or sport that takes you outdoors or gives you the chance to try a new activity. But if you’ve never done something before, it’s natural to be nervous. What if you embarrass yourself or can’t keep up? While those fears are natural, there’s no reason to let them stop you from trying something new. There are actually a lot of activities that don’t require any experience at all. With that in mind, here are a few summer sports that are just perfect for beginners:

  1. Sand volleyball: This sport is great for bringing friends together, meeting new people, and working up a sweat. You have other players supporting you and the beach setting usually allows a little more casualness with the rules, so beginners feel welcome. There are plenty of beaches and organizations in Michigan that host sand volleyball tournaments, like State Games of Michigan or iDig Volleyball. You can even play pick-up games with friends—all you need is a ball, net and local beach.
  2. Ultimate Frisbee: Mixing the best features of soccer, basketball and football into one, this sport is one of the most fun ways you can spend a beautiful day. Since it’s a total team sport, it’s easy to learn from your teammates and pick up the rules quickly your very first time. If you’re a beginner, check out the Detroit Ultimate Frisbee league–it’s open to all skill and ability levels.
  3. Zumba: This upbeat dance class doesn’t just burn tons of calories, it’s also really fun and can give you a big confidence boost. Rest assured, you don’t need to be a dancer to be good at Zumba. The instructors walk you through each move and do the class with you, and if you don’t know how to do a certain move, that’s fine too! Moving in your own way to the beat is totally accepted.
  4. Biking: Michigan is absolutely beautiful this time of year, and one way to take advantage of all that scenery is to see it from two wheels. If it’s been a long time since you’ve gone biking, start by practicing in low-traffic areas. And remember: You can go your own pace until you feel more comfortable.
