Ready, set, …sick?

IMG_9661So there I was, all pumped up for the first week of #healthyme and I come down with a nasty cold. It crept up on me too. Monday came with a scratchy throat and Tuesday had a sneeze or three. In between going to bed Tuesday night and Wednesday morning I awoke with fever, chills and sweats. For the next five days I barely had the energy to get off the couch or out of bed, let alone work out.

Not the start I was hoping for. I was all geared up to hit the ground running.

I’ve got a pretty good exercise routine going these days. My main thing is hitting the elliptical 4-5 days a week for 45 minutes. Mind you, I don’t love working out, but I love what it does for me. The physical benefits are obvious. I’m slimmer (and still trimming), stronger and have much more endurance when it comes to playing with my daughter or my dog. I really enjoy the feeling in my muscles from having worked out. It tells me I’m progressing.

However, it’s the time to clear my head out while “running” on the machine that I like best. I crank up the tunes and just disappear into my thoughts. It helps me to clear the clutter and burn off the stressors of daily life. It’s become an invaluable part of maintaining my sanity in the midst of my super-busy life.

And that is what I missed most while I was sick. After just a few days I was seriously considering getting back to my routine, but I wasn’t physically ready and pushing it probably would’ve made things worse. Fortunately my wife keeps me from doing such silly things. The following Monday I finally got back on; five whole days off was not cool.

I enjoyed every moment of it: the burn, the sweat, the tunes and the resultant clear mind. Definitely #healthyme.

  1. I know the feeling of being sick when you just are getting started. I was on day one of a 8 week walking spree at work when I came down with pneumonia. I have not met my steps all week . I am frustrated because I know on a good day I can. Being off work a week isn’t helping with that either. I am currently doing the walking spree through BCN and am enjoying it, but this week my steps are not getting in. Looking forward to feeling better so that I can get walking again. Noticing a big difference in my energy level with the walking.
