Hope Starts Here Challenge Supports Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center
On your mark. Get set. Hope.
First, you’ll want to make sure your shoes are walk- or run-worthy and your bicycle has enough air in the tires. Then, sign up for the 2018 River Valley Bank – Hope Starts Here Challenge on May 12, 2018, at Marquette’s Lakeview Arena.
You don’t have to be a super athlete to participate. This annual fundraiser for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center includes events for everyone from competitive runners and trail cyclists to leisurely walkers of all ages.
Your health will benefit ― and your heart will be happy ― knowing that you’re giving hope to people affected by brain tumors. Money raised supports education and training for research and medical professionals as well as treatment for patients.
UMBTC is a collaboration between Northern Michigan University, U.P. Health System – Marquette and the Superior Health Foundation. Their goal is to improve patient outcomes by better understanding how the brain works.
In its 12-year history, the Hope Starts Here Challenge has netted more than $300,000 for the cause.
“The Brain and Spine Center at U.P. Health System – Marquette is pleased to once again be a part of this huge community event that raises money for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center,” said Shane Kentala, operations manager of the Upper Peninsula Health System Brain and Spine Center. Kentala also spearheads this event. “It’s an opportunity for friends, family, caregivers and scientists to celebrate life, remember those who we have lost and work toward a cure for brain cancer by enhancing brain tumor research locally, and by assisting the university in educating young scientists who will be our future hope for better research, treatment and care.”
All challenge participants will receive a Subway lunch. Chip timers will track participants in all competitive events; top performers will receive awards.
