Put a lid on it, for bicycle safety

Helmet safetyWith the warm weather here to stay, and the last of the public schools closing down for summer break, you can almost hear Alice Cooper’s 1972 ballad, Schools Out, echoing the halls of schools everywhere, as kids break free from their teachers.

The nicer weather presents a great opportunity for kids and their families to get outside and enjoy the summer air, while getting some much needed physical activity, after a long winter of cabin fever. Trips to the beach, a walk in the park, or a family adventure down the White Pine Bike Trail, are all great ways to experience everything Michigan has to offer.

The Grand Rapids Griffins and several other local area organizations—including police departments, pediatricians, schools, libraries, bike shops and sporting goods stores—are doing their part to ensure that kids have a healthy and safe summer full of fun activities.

June 19 marks the beginning of the 15th annual Grand Rapids Griffins Put A Lid On It helmet safety program. The program, which is free to children ages 1-12, enables kids to learn about bicycle safety, sign a pledge to always wear their helmet, and even provides a free helmet, with proper fitting, to the first 100 kids at each location.

According to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, bicycle related deaths are highest in kids ages 10-14, the use of a helmet can reduce the risk of brain injury during an accident by 88 percent. Brain injury isn’t just limited to bicycle accidents. Brain Injury is the most serious injury to inline skaters who do not wear protective gear.
