Grace is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes and certified health coach at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and a featured blogger here at A Healthier Michigan.

Grace is a lover of food and a lover of life. She is a wife, a mommy of two and enjoys dancing. Grace is very passionate about helping the world become a healthier and happier place.

grace_headshot_062016Grace graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics and a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. Grace has also earned a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University. Mrs. Derocha has a number of certifications to help her educate people regarding how to live a healthier lifestyle, including a weight loss management certification and as a group fitness instructor.

1. What is your favorite thing about living in Michigan?

I love the beauty of the four seasons in Michigan. Even though I have lived in Hawaii (and trust me that was paradise) there is no place like home sweet home in the MItten state.

2. What things do you find yourself doing that you said you’d “never” do?

Where do I begin? Hahaha! I always thought that I would be the perfect and ultimate mom, but I don’t even know what that means. I constantly have mom guilt and with that at times rely on convenience foods that I thought I would never dive into, especially for my kids. I also thought that I would never skip a workout, boy was I wrong about that one too. I am happy to find some balance in life though and grateful for that.

3. What are your favorite ways to stay healthy?

In general I try to move more and eat healthier. I try to schedule my workouts and find something I love to do, so it is fun. I also love to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and find ways to always add good nutrition into the food we eat. I never deprive myself of things I do like, finding ways to nourish the body, while having balance and moderation.

4. What songs or artists are in heavy rotation in your iPod right now?

Dance, pop and hip-hop songs for workouts are a must. Some of my favorites include Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Drake, The 90’s and more. Honestly, I grew up as a dancer, so my love of music has range, from Jason Mraz, H.E.R. and Adele to anything to bop to.

5. What are your favorite things to read online? How do you stay informed and inspired?

I receive a variety of e-mail newsletters, but some of my favorites are from American Diabetes AssociationAmerican Heart Association and the Joslin Diabetes Center. I also visit Elite Daily, Shape, Self, Cooking Light, Women’s Health, Men’s Health and Prevention for healthy information online. I also try to keep up to date with the latest research publications.

    I am a physical therapist who recently opened a private practice in my hometown of Byron Center, MI, and specialize in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine. “A Healthier Michigan” is one of the ‘likes” on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/freedomphysicaltherapy) and I have enjoyed several of the tips to healthier living. I have shared some of the posts on our site as well.

    However, I did notice a stretching technique for carpal tunnel prevention on your recent post “WellnessWedneday:10 Exercises to Do at Your Desk” that you may want to consider modifying. This is in regard to the “Carpal Tunnel Reliever” stretch. The video shows the employee leaning forward onto the desk with palms facing UP and fingers pointing toward her, causing extreme flexion of the wrists. This is actually the type of motion that we often test in order to REPRODUCE symptoms (please refer to Phalen’s Test) by further compressing the Median nerve. A positive test (causing pain or numbness/tingling) is indicative of carpal tunnel syndrome.

    The proper stretch to prevent Median nerve compression is to lean forward onto outstretched hands with palms DOWN and fingers pointing AWAY from you. This causes extension of the wrist rather than flexion, and relieves pressure on the nerve (I have a nice photo of this stretch if you would like me to send it to you).

    As a BCBSM provider, I certainly appreciate the efforts that are being made to promote health and prevent injury. Together, we can help to change lives for the better!
