Celebrate MLK Jr. Day Across Michigan

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is recognized as a day of service across the country. It is not only a day to celebrate Dr. King’s life and the significant work he did, but to give back to our individual communities as he did during his lifetime.

There are many events taking place on Monday, Jan. 20, around Michigan to help carry on the message King left the world. Look for an event near you in the list below to help remember the historical civil rights leader and everything he accomplished.

  • Southeast Michigan: Participate in a peace walk or attend MLK Day at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
  • Grand Rapids: Attend the Urban League of West Michigan’s annual breakfast or take part in one of many events taking place at Grand Valley State University.
  • Lansing: The 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Luncheon takes place at the Lansing Center with a keynote speech by Congressman John Lewis.
  • Ypsilanti: Many events are planned during Eastern Michigan University’s annual celebration.
  • Marquette: Northern Michigan University will honor King with a number of ways to volunteer during a day of service.
  • Kalamazoo: A community-wide day of service is planned in Kalamazoo.
  • Flint: Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy at the Flint Institute of Arts with special programming that will allow participants to leave with a personal reminder of his legacy.

  1. The more I learn about King and his life, heart, attitude, and beliefs, the more I’ve grown to appreciate and love him. And what a contrast to today’s so-called civil rights activists who would suffer rebuke if King were here today.
