#MIKidsCan Champion of the Month: Catching Up With Conner Smith

Last October, Conner Smith received the news that he’d spend Thanksgiving Day riding on a parade float, delivering the game ball to Ford Field and watching the Detroit Lions from club-level seats with his family. This year, he’s being recognized as our #MIKidsCan Champion of the Month for his continued dedication to healthy habits since the experience.

Conner, 11, was chosen randomly from more than 1,300 entries for the 2015 #MIKidsCan Turkey Day VIP Sweepstakes. Since winning, he has been inspired to keep his family active and healthy—especially around the holiday season.

“I’ve learned that it’s important to eat healthy, stay healthy and try new sports,” Conner said.

Conner Smith delivered the Thanksgiving game ball to Detroit Lions Coach Jim Caldwell after winning the 2015 #MIKidsCan Turkey Day VIP Sweepstakes.

For most of his life, Conner has been dedicated to one sport in particular: baseball. His favorite positions are third base, pitcher and center field. He plays year-round, on and off the field—despite his mom’s pleas to take it outside of the house.

For one of his school projects, Conner plans to show his classmates how to throw pitches, go for a ground ball and demonstrate how your body and glove should be positioned during a game.

“If you get into a sport and keep practicing, you could one day be amazing at that sport,” he said. “If you end up in the NBA, you’d be happy and healthy!”

Conner is the youngest of four siblings who are sometimes reluctant to get away from their electronics, but he manages to encourage the family to get out of the house on a regular basis. This year, he joined his mom and stepdad walking in a 5K to support suicide prevention.

So what’s Conner’s advice to other kids who want to stay active?

“Once you start getting active, try to find a sport you like and sign up—but before you sign up, practice a lot because it helps your body get better,” he advised.

To enter your child in this year’s #MIKidsCan Turkey Day VIP Sweepstakes, parents can visit www.DetroitLions.com/TurkeyDayVIP through Wednesday, Nov. 9 and submit their response as to how their child will be getting active this Thanksgiving. Children ages 10-18 are eligible to win.img_8523
