RUNdown of Michigan’s Best Fall Races

This month is still all about sunshine and summer, but it won’t be long before the leaves start changing and the days get shorter. And believe it or not, that’s a good thing! Fall is the perfect season to lace up your sneakers and head outside for a run. You could do a jog around the neighborhood, but why not add some fun to your run and sign up for one of the many races happening around Michigan? Whether you want to run for a good cause, a good workout or a good view, there’s an event for you.

Glow in the Park | September 13 | Mt. Pleasant

If you pre-register for this nighttime race, you’ll receive a swag bag full of glow-in-the-dark gear to help you shine. Runners ages 12 and up can register for $35, and those under 12 for $25.

Pulse3 Foundation Run for Your Heart | September 7 | Saginaw

Now in its ninth year, this race is dedicated to the fight against heart disease. Registration fees range from $22 to $50, depending on if you want to do the 5K, 10K or half-marathon. There’s also a free tot trot if you have a little runner in your family.

The Bridge Run | September 15 | Grand Rapids

Starting in downtown Grand Rapids, this run takes you through some of the city’s most scenic spots, over historic bridges and across the Grand River. Registration fees range from $30 for the 5K Run/Walk to $45 for the 10K (prices go up September 1).

St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer | September 21 | Ann Arbor

This annual event has a powerful mission: to raise $110,000 and help end childhood cancer. While registration is only $10 per runner, attendees are encouraged to form fundraising teams and participate together.

Healthy Kids Running Series | September 8, 15, 22, 29 and October 6 | Portage

This series of runs shows kids how fun it can be to stay fit. Kids compete each week in age-appropriate runs for a chance to earn points. The boy and girl with the highest points after all five sessions receives a trophy. Registration for the five-week program is $35.

Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon | October 19-20 | Detroit

For 39 years, this race has been a tradition for long-distance runners across the state. Not ready for a full 26.2 miles? There are also 5K and half-marathon races. Registration fees are $40 for the 5K, $120 for the half-marathon, and $130 for the full marathon (but the prices go up in September).

Great Turtle Trail Run | October 26 | Mackinac Island

Celebrate the last open weekend on Mackinac Island by running one of the most scenic trails in the state. Register before September 30 to secure the $60 registration rate. Starting October 1, rates go up to $65.

Day of the Dead 1 Mile, 5K, 10K, 13.1, 26.2 | October 31 | Virtual

A unique cultural experience, this Day of the Dead race is a virtual race, allowing participants to be able to run from anywhere. all proceeds are donated to Souls4Souls, a shoe based charity. registration is open now starting at $20.

  1. How do we get Team Hannah’s 5k run/walk on September 17th in Whitehall MI listed. It is celebrating its 5 year with a kickoff free kids fun run before the race. We raise awareness and monies to find a cure for Tuberous Sclerosis. The last three years we have given a check to Van Andel for the research to find a cure.

  2. How can I get the Run with RAHS 5K, also on September 17th in Ypsilanti, MI listed? This is the first annual Run and proceeds from the event will support direct patient care at school-based health centers in Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and Flint.
