Activities to Help your Kids Go Green on Earth Day

Earth Day, which happens this year on Friday, April 22, is the perfect time to educate your little ones about the importance of respecting nature and keeping our environment healthy. Across Michigan, you’ll discover lots of fun events perfect for kids, including educational speakers, community clean-ups and eco-friendly arts and crafts. Here are a few you and your kids won’t want to miss:

Sweet Earth Arts and Music Festival
Traverse City
April 16, 1:00pm to 6:00pm
At northern Michigan’s largest Earth Day celebration, enjoy the performances from regional artists as well as child-friendly science activities, a “worm petting” zoo and a recyclable arts and crafts tables.

GreenFest at the Detroit Zoo
Royal Oak
April 16 and 17, 9:00am to 3:00pm
During GreenFest at the Detroit Zoo, you will you get to visit with all of your kid’s favorite animals while also participating in lots of earth-centric activities. Create fun crafts, hear zookeepers talk, check out exhibits by local conservation groups and artists and experience lots of other earth-friendly activities and games. Tickets to the zoo are discounted for the event.

Earth Day Festival at the Leslie Science & Nature Center
Ann Arbor
Apr 17, 12:00pm to 4:00pm
This free event features displays and information from 40 local environmentally-conscious organizations. Kids will love the live animal demonstrations, hands-on activities, entertainment and educational sessions on cool science topics like energy and water awareness.

Michigan Earth Day Fest at Rochester City Center

April 22 through 24, times vary per day
The largest Earth Day festival in Michigan, this three-day program offers a wide variety of exhibits, attractions and kids’ activities. A “Kid’s Corner” includes a rock climbing wall, straw bale maze and crafts. (The event includes great information on wellness and fitness programs for moms and dads, too!)

Belle Isle Annual Cleanup

Looking for a more hands-on Earth Day activity? The annual Belle Isle cleanup is a chance for community volunteers to get their hands a little dirty as they perk up the park for the season. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and no registration is required, so give your little one some gardening gloves and a rake to join in on the outdoor fun.

Earth Day Celebration at Kalamazoo Nature Center

Along with an Earth Day 5K, Kalamazoo’s Nature Center is hosting a kids “Raccoon Run” for ages eight and under. The Center is offering free admission for the entirety of the day, including free trail hiking and children’s crafts.
