Learning with technology
“Technology is not a silver bullet. It’s only as good as the teachers…using it as one more tool to help inspire, and teach, and work through problems.” -President Barack Obama
Every day our lives are infused with technology, making it difficult for younger generations to envision life without computers, smartphones, and tablets. A wealth of knowledge is available to us with a simple click of a button, connecting us with information from around the world within seconds. Technology is a powerful tool and can serve as an educational platform for children. So, what are the benefits of raising children in a tech-centered environment?
Technology enhances learning for children
Children can adapt to technology with minimal effort because they are learning in blended-learning environments. Learning through technology is sweeping across the country and as students learn, they become more digitally literate. That’s why Michigan has created the Core Curriculum Content Standard for educators, to make sure that students are equipped to meet the demands of the 21st century.
Studies show classrooms that mix technology into the educational experience are transforming teaching and learning. Teachers are using technology as a tool to help students with different learning styles and students are becoming more creative because learning is more enjoyable.
Technology combines classroom activity with digital learning tools, such as computers and handheld devices and also helps accelerate the learning process by:
  • Expanding course offerings
  • Offering different learning experiences and learning materials
  • Making learning support available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Building 21st century skills
  • Increasing student engagement and motivation
Recently, ConnectEd, an initiative to incorporate technology into schools, has allowed classrooms to have access to Wi-Fi, tablets and computers. This initiative equips teachers with the best technology to make their lesson plans personalized for each student.
