Beat Cabin Fever With These Indoor Family Destinations

keep kids active indoors
It’s so easy during the winter to settle in at home with your kids and binge-watch the latest Disney movies. But do that and you’ll be missing out on one of the best things about living in Michigan: all of the fun, indoor destinations perfect for entertaining kids and parents. Our list below highlights five indoor activities that can keep the whole family active and warm this winter.
  1. Hang out with some animals. Michigan’s newest aquarium, the Sea Life Aquarium, opened January 29th and is located near the Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills. With more than 5,000 sea creatures, it will take an entire day to see everything. But that’s not the only destination for watching animals in the state. There is also the Detroit Zoo, which is home to a new super-friendly grey seal named Jersey, the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids and the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.
  1. Jump around. Are your kids jumping on the bed or off the walls and driving you crazy? The AirTime Trampoline & Game Park can help get rid of that pent up winter energy. As the name implies, there are wall-to-wall trampolines along with basketball hoops, foam pits and more. There are three locations in the Metro-Detroit area: Troy, Sterling Heights and Canton.
  1. Sneak in some learning. The Michigan Science Center in Detroit is a unique hands-on museum that makes education fun. If your kids are interested in space, motion, nutrition, engineering or other science topics, this is the place for them! There are interactive activities, fun shows and Michigan’s only Chrysler IMAX Dome Theater, which shows movies about everything from the ice age to humpback whales.
  1. Get away for the weekend. The Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City features a 38,000 square-foot indoor water park with eight waterslides, five pools, two whirlpools and a four-story/12-level interactive Tree House Water Fort. The 200,000 gallons of water here can be splashed, sprayed, waved and played in, giving you a sense of summer in the middle of winter.
  1. Don’t forget the little kids. With an indoor playground, a giant “Lite Brite,” an amphitheater for fun performances and plenty of featured seasonal exhibits, there’s plenty for younger children to explore at Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. There are also classes on dancing and cooking and workshops to show parents and kids how to keep playing together once you go home.
