The holiday season puts a lot of people in a charitable mood. And not only is volunteering beneficial for your community, it’s also full of health benefits. People who volunteer have lower signs of depressions, lower mortality rates and better blood pressure. But once you decide to volunteer, you need to figure out where to give your time. There are so many way to get involved in your community, from helping serve a meal in a homeless shelter to donating toys, clothes or money to a family in need. To help you decide how to give back, check out these five options:
Kids Food Basket is a nonprofit organization fighting childhood hunger so that young people can learn and live well. It serves more than 6,000 kids each weekday in greater Grand Rapids and Muskegon. Go here to learn how to get involved with this organization.
Older Persons’ Commission lets you spread the holiday spirit by delivering hot midday meals to seniors in the Rochester area.
Goodwill Northern Michigan is located in Traverse City and provides a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. You can teach or mentor young students, assist with preparing and serving meals or help organize special events. If you don’t leave near Traverse City, find the Goodwill in your community and learn how you can get involved.
Midland’s Open Dooris the only soup kitchen in Midland County and provides more than 46,000 meals a year. It also supplies clothing for men and women and is a crisis shelter for people needing help to turn their lives around.
Meals on Wheelsin Ann Arbor provides nutritious meals to homebound residents. Volunteers can choose the days they would like to help out and are encouraged to bring a friend along for the ride.
