5 Michigan Superfoods We Love

Ah yes, the ever-trendy “superfood.” Ranging from fruits and veggies to grains and greens, there is always a hot new superfood on the market. The great thing, though, is that many classic superfoods can be found right here in the mitten!

High in nutritional value and low in damaging content, there are many delicious, Michigan-based foods that also provide amazing health benefits. Here are five of our favorites:

  1. Cherries– Traverse City is known far and wide for these delicious fruits. Dried or fresh cherries contain tons of nutrients like Vitamin A, Potassium and Fiber. Nearly 75 percent of the U.S.’s produced tart cherries come from Michigan too!
  2. Coffee– Coffee has been shown to reduce instances of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, certain cancers, heart rhythm problems and strokes . Cities like Holland, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo boast some well-recognized brews too. Just be sure to use light, natural cream if necessary and don’t load up on any artificial sweeteners!
  3. Berries– Between blueberries, strawberries and other fresh varieties, Michigan’s upper peninsula arguably grows some of the best berries in the mitten. Most farmers markets have some great varieties too, and they are great for skin and brain functionality.
  4.  Asparagus– Not only is asparagus a veggie native to the mitten, but it is loaded with health benefits. This superfood contains vitamins A, C, E and K, iron, potassium, folate and protein, among others. Nutrients are said to be most concentrated in the tip of the veggie as well.
  5. Beans– These superfoods come in many different varieties, are packed with protein and are easily blended or substituted into any meal! With Michigan harvesting times in September and October, there’s never been a better time to pick up some fresh Michigan beans either.
