Step Out to Stop Diabetes!

More than 29 million people in the U.S. have diabetes and one in four people do not even know that they have it. With statistics like that, it is important to practice early awareness and an active lifestyle. One easy way to accomplish both is participation in a Step Out: Walk to End Diabetes fundraising event!

Founded in 1991, Step Out walks were aimed to help fight the disease and now seek to end it entirely. The walks occur in 125 different cities across the country each year and recently included Detroit. Others are still yet to occur such as one in Grand Rapids, among others.

Walks typically range from two to six miles and vary in course abilities so that all ages are able to participate. Nearly 75 percent of walk proceeds go right back to research, advocacy and public awareness activities.

Participants are encouraged to walk in teams and push each other to sustain fundraising efforts. Last month, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s team exceeded their goal of $50,000 in earnings for the cause. More than 1,700 walkers also came out to participate in the event at the Detroit Zoo.

The American Diabetes Association believes it is important to know that diabetes prevention and maintenance is possible. Maintain a healthy weight and sustain a nutritious diet to reduce your risk for diabetes or dangerous diabetic symptoms. Also, keep active! A great way to do so would be participating in a Step Out Walk.

There are several online screening tests to assess your risk of having diabetes. Consult with your physician if you think you may have the disease, or are at an elevated risk. Visit the ADA’s website for more information on diabetes awareness and how to locate your local Step Out walk.
