MSU Teddy Bear Picnic a “Huge Success”

Teddy bear picnic 2This past Saturday, over 1,200 kids and their parents braved chilly temperatures and overcast skies to take part in the 10th annual Michigan State University (MSU) Teddy Bear Picnic.

The kids’ stuffed animal companions didn’t seem to mind the weather or getting poked and prodded by MSU medical students and staff. As part of the event, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Teddy Bear Hospital was set up to help attendees understand why there’s no reason to fear a trip to the doctor or hospital.

Organizers said the event helped accomplish that goal and more.

“The MSU Teddy Bear Picnic featuring the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Teddy Bear Hospital was a tremendous partnership. Saturday’s event at the MSU 4-H Children’s Garden was a great opportunity for kids in our community to experience the doctor’s office and hospital setting in a fun and engaging way,” said B.J. Puchala, Senior Community Liaison for BCBSM.

“We loved being a part of it and joining all of the parents, grandparents and skilled volunteers who each did their part to make this a rich experience for every child that participated.”

Barbara Ball-McClure, MSU College of Human Medicine Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, said vendors and volunteers new to the event this year are eager to make a repeat appearance next year.

“The annual Teddy Bear Picnic was a huge success. Children and adults alike enjoyed the activities and learning about health-related issues that are important to the young members of our community,” she said.

Kids in attendance enjoyed going through an ambulance, getting their picture taken with Sparty, dancing with the MSU Dance Team, jumping rope, running relay races, having balloon animals made by a clown, and having their faces painted. They also received free healthy snacks of apples, yogurt, and string cheese.
