When you head all the way up to the Upper Peninsula, one of the must-visit cities is Sault Ste. Marie.
We certainly did that on our recent AHM road trip to the UP. We spent a whole day in “The Soo.” Home to Lake Superior State University, Sault Ste. Marie also boasts several museums that focus on the area and its rich histories. The Tower of History, The River of History Museum and the SS Valley Camp Museum cover everything from the earliest of settlements through modern times, including the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Sault Ste. Marie’s most famous attraction: The Soo Locks.
The Locks are situated on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, and between Michigan and Ontario, CA. The Locks allow ships of all sizes to bypass the rapids of the river, where the water falls 21 feet. The locks pass an average of 10,000 ships per year during the months they’re open. They close from January until March when ice halts all passage.
A boat tour can take you through the locks, from the U.S. side and back the Canadian side, if you want to experience this engineering marvel. If you’re not heading to the U.P. anytime soon, take a look at the time lapsed video we made on our own tour.
