That’s right, we want you to enjoy the taste of eating right

Every year in March the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics promotes National Nutrition Month, a campaign urging Americans to improve their eating habits. What started out as National Nutrition Week in the 1970s has grown into an entire month. A clever theme is chosen and the word is spread to get people thinking about their daily food choices. This year, the Academy and your friendly Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Dietitians are asking you to “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right”.

It’s safe to say that there are many factors that go into how, where, what, and why we choose the food that we eat, but I don’t think anyone will argue that the food that we enjoy most are the ones we’ll choose most often. Sometimes we choose some pretty great foods, other times we may have a little work to do. In order to tap into the foods you may enjoy, dietitians everywhere want you to enjoy those foods while also considering some healthier options.

Try these ideas the next time you’re preparing a meal, dining out, or ordering in:

  • Making mac and cheese? Add frozen veggies like broccoli or carrots for more color.
  • For a chili with less fat, opt for the ground turkey instead of ground beef or forget the meat altogether and just add beans.
  • A favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe can have a little extra fiber by using half whole wheat flour and half all purpose flour.
  • Is Mom’s spaghetti and meatballs one of your favorites? Substitute ground turkey for ground beef to decrease the fat.

  1. Great post and tips for #NNM. However, I’m a big fan of using 93% lean or leaner Ground Beef in recipes instead of using Ground Turkey. Less fat and more taste!
