Detroit Metro Airport: Where to find healthier meals
Whether you’re visiting your dad in Florida, ringing in the New Year in New York City or going skiing in Colorado, you have to make it through the airport before reaching your destination. And like most people waiting for their flight, you’ll probably want to grab a bite while you’re there. Sure, fast food chains dominate the available food options at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, but there are great, healthier picks, too.
So instead of the greasy cheeseburger and fries, pick up something more wholesome at one of these restaurants located in the McNamara and North Terminals:
PB&J – Gate A7
In a rush? Head here for an all-natural peanut butter with cranberry jam, honey and bananas. It’s a filling and delicious option that takes you back to your playground days.
Slap Shotz Bar & Grill – Gate A23
Vegetarian and vegan options are available at this sit-down style bar, like spiced chili with beans.
Sora Sushi Bar – Gate A35
From noodle soups to their specialty rolls, you can keep the calories minimal with a delicious sushi meal. Extra hungry? Add some edamame for soy protein.
Vino Volo – Gate A45
Although it’s known for its wine, the menu has lunch, dinner and small plate dishes, such as a hearty white bean soup.
Boar’s Head Deli – Gate A69
Similar to your neighborhood deli, Boar’s Head offers cold cuts but with a twist, including a low-sodium, low-fat quesadilla. Control the calories in your sandwich by cutting down on mayo and cheese.
Charley’s Grilled Subs – Gate A73
For a lighter option than the huge hoagies, get the Grilled Teriyaki Salad. It’s only 200 calories and has great flavor with cucumbers and banana peppers.
Vito’s Market – Gate B18, C11
The Southwestern Wrap is a perfect breakfast meal if you’re at the airport for an early morning flight. It has protein and carbs for energy and won’t weight you down like a fast food biscuit sandwich.
Hockeytown Café – Gate D12
Red Wings memorabilia cover the walls at this Detroit-themed bar, it goes beyond the normal sports-bar menu with lots of gluten-free dishes.
