Lansing kicks off the holiday season with Silver Bells in the City

IMG_5094_smallOnce again, as it has for the last 29 years, the city of Lansing celebrates the opening of the holiday season with the annual Silver Bells in the City event. Spread over several blocks, central to the capitol building, Silver Bells in the City offers up a family-friendly night of holiday themed events.

The fun kicks off with the Silver Bells Fun Run, a three-mile walk/run that starts off in front of the State Capitol. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the run sees participants dressing up in all manner of holiday themed costumes.

While the run carries on, other events get underway. The Radio Disney Road Crew sets up on the Capitol lawn with music and prize giveaways from impromptu quiz shows. Refreshments and holiday shopping are available in the Silver Bells Village on Washington Avenue.

The Electric Light Parade is another of the evening’s highlights. Floats, marching bands, monster trucks, horse drawn carriages and of course, Santa Claus, all covered in thousands of lights roll down the parade route to everyone’s delight. The buildings lining the parade route are illuminated with thousands of feet of lights too. You can see how that is done here.

The night culminates in the lighting of the state Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn followed by a full fireworks show set behind the Capitol building itself.
