Run together: Benefits of joining a Michigan running group

running groupRunning is often considered a solo sport but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. Like any workout, having a buddy often leads to better results. That’s one of the many reasons why running groups are becoming more and more popular. Whether you’re new to the sport or an elite runner, there are many benefits that running groups provide to their members:

Motivation and Accountability: This especially rings true for long-distance training. The days are about to get shorter so having a group to run with is safer. Also, knowing that your running group is waiting for you makes waking up early on a Saturday a lot easier, especially on those cold and rainy mornings! There are no excuses when it comes to running groups getting in their scheduled runs…and more often than not you’ll find running in the rain is exhilarating!  Who would want to miss that by sleeping in?!

Support: Running groups are great to help you keep on keeping on. With the Detroit Marathon in just over a month, runners are at the height of their training.  Having support to do 10, 15, 20 miles is crucial. They’ll push you, cheer you on and carry you through. They’ll also set the training schedule for you. How you train is very important in preparing for a race. For new runners, they’ll encourage you to sign up for that first race. They’ll also help you with how to dress, stretches for before and after your run, how to stay hydrated and tips and techniques for proper carb intake to sustain you on those longer runs. .

Social: What a great way to meet new people! Friendships and relationships often form on the running path. In fact, running groups encourage talking because, if you’re able to carry on a conversation, you’re running at a healthy and steady pace, which is great for long distance running. Many groups will end their runs at a local bar or coffee shop so that conversations and camaraderie can continue.
