Bike commuters turn heads, lead the way during Bike to Work Day Detroit event
Today is Bike to Work Day across much of the country, when participants are gleefully posting photos of themselves clad in spandex all over the social universe. I helped to organize the Detroit version, which culminated in a catered breakfast reception in the courtyard outside Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s downtown headquarters.
More than 100 people registered to ride in one of four organized group routes that started in Northville, Dearborn, Royal Oak and St. Clair Shores. The event was touted as a fun and healthy way to break up the dreaded daily commute and spread camaraderie among like-minded commuters who work in Detroit.
Huge thanks are due to my colleagues in planning and sponsorship from Miller Canfield, American Cycle and Fitness, Mode Shift and the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, plus Alex and Christina. We couldn’t have done this without your help. And thanks to KIND Healthy Snacks and Muscle Milk for the tasty giveaways and Shinola and Detroit Bikes for the new metal.
We succeeded in growing participant numbers and by having a fun get-together, and we’d love to make it even bigger and better next year. In the meantime, if you’re interested in bike commuting in the Detroit area, check out the Detroit Bike Commuters or Bike to Work Day Detroit groups on Facebook.
