Good Dental Health Means Healthy Aging
As you continue to grow older, your teeth and gums do too. That’s why it’s important to maintain the proper care for your mouth at any age. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), most people believe losing their teeth as they age is inevitable, but this isn’t true. In honor of September Healthy Aging Month, take control of your dental future by using these tips from the ADA to keep your teeth strong and healthy for a lifetime:
- Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or if the bristles become frayed, to make sure your teeth are getting the best clean.
- Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush. Consider using an electric toothbrush if you have limited mobility in your upper body.
- Drink the recommended eight glasses of water per day, preferably with fluoride in order to prevent tooth decay over the years. Good old fashioned tap water is actually good for you! Most bottled waters do not contain fluoride.
- Quit smoking to increase your overall health as you age and decrease problems regarding gum disease and tooth loss.
Most importantly, don’t forget to visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups. Schedule your appointment now before the holidays!
