Power foods to fuel your workout

We all know that exercising is something that must be done every day for a healthy body. However, after working and taking care of life’s responsibilities I am sometimes too tired and drained to workout. These are some of my favorite foods that I eat to give me an energy boost for my workout so I can get through it.

Trail Mix

Trail Mix is one of my favorite workout snacks hands down. Trail mix is an abundant source of phosphorus and zinc to boost your workout.  Phosphorus will boost energy to get to get you through your work out and increase muscle growth after your workout. The zinc helps to speed up muscle recovery after the workout. I usually add other healthy ingredients like nuts and dried fruits for effectiveness.  The healthy sugars in the fruit will give you an extra energy boost, while the seeds and nuts will prevent your insulin level from dropping.


Yogurt is another one of my favorite snacks to get the most out of my workout. The magnesium in yogurt provides extra energy for your workout by activating enzymes in your body that are involved in the metabolism of protein and carbohydrates. Yogurt is my go to snack for all of those rigorous cardio and weightlifting sessions.


Some fats are an essential part of a healthy diet, but conventional wisdom says they should be avoided before a workout.  Conventional wisdom can be wrong because nuts, like almonds, an excellent pre-workout food.  Almonds and other nuts are mono-saturated fats which provide energy boosting fatty acids like omega – 3s and omega- 6s.  Nuts like almonds peanuts and pecans are perfect foods for a workout.  I try to avoid Saturated fats like cheese, butter and processed sugars so I don’t burn out early during my work out.


I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast if I want to start my day with a workout. Oatmeal is the perfect work out snack for the morning. Oatmeal is full of carbs that will wake you right up and keep your energy levels consistent for a morning workout. Oatmeal also contains B Vitamins that lower stress levels and turn carbs into energy. Oatmeal with your morning workout is a perfect way to start your day.
