There’s just something about coffee that makes the soul and the body smile!

Just the thought of waking up to that first cup of morning coffee makes me feel good. If you’re a coffee drinker you know exactly what I’m referring to. The simple aroma of coffee can even make me happy, especially a dark roast that has been freshly ground, causing coffee particles to float in the air … I can almost smell it now!  Honestly, there’s just something about coffee that makes my soul smile!

Considering how many years I’ve been enjoying the stuff, I assumed that I knew all there was to know about my favorite morning beverage. I was wrong. While making a quick pass by my television as I was getting ready for my morning walk, I learned something I never knew before today. I stopped long enough to sit down and watch the segment titled Your Breakfast Questions Answered with my friend and nutrition expert on NBC’s Today Show Joy Bauer.  She spoke about the importance of breakfast, something that I was well aware of and then proceeded to talk about the levels of caffeine in coffee.   This is when I really became interested in what Joy had to share.

Part of why I like coffee is the caffeine so I really wanted to hear how much caffeine was in a cup of dark roast coffee, my absolute favorite!   My assumption was that the heartier and more robust the coffee, the more caffeine it contains … but the total opposite is true!  Joy said that the more the coffee beans are roasted, the more caffeine that is burned off.  Dark roast coffee contains less caffeine than a lighter roast.   Am I the only person who didn’t know this?

Of course, it doesn’t change the fact that I enjoy the taste of a darker brew more, but it surely will change how I ask for a cup when purchasing it at coffee shop.  I used to inform the cashier that I really needed a boost and to give me the darkest  coffee that they had.  Now I wonder if they wanted to tell me that what I really needed was a light roast?  Oh well, no damage done I suppose.  At least I know that whichever roast I’ve been served, the coffee still contains several health benefits!   Add a little skim, soy or unsweetened almond milk and a touch of honey… and you’re good to go!

I also learned more information about coffee from another friend and fellow blogger, Grace Derocha.  Drinking coffee can reduce the risk of prostate cancer amongst men. And the more coffee you drink, the better. The antioxidants found in caffeinated or decaf coffee is the magic ingredient.   This is information I will surely be sharing with the men in my family, it’s too important NOT to.
