Getting Your Body Ready for Swimsuit Weather Is Easier Than You Think

It may not look like it right now, but summer will be here before we know it. By the time May arrives, the temperatures will allow for a pair of shorts, tank tops, and yes… swimsuits! Okay, don’t cringe yet — you still have time to lose the weight you’ve been talking about since the New Year arrived, and I’m going to help you do it!

I’m going to be honest here: Losing the weight that you’ve wished to lose forever does not come from any fad diets, weight loss pills, surgeries or crazy exercise equipment that can exhaust you trying to assemble. It comes from something else.

Now I want you to take a good look at your current lifestyle. If you’re someone who rushes home from work to a big dinner, only to then head for the sofa or easy chair where you spend the night snacking on chips and cookies, you should already have a clue on the first step on how you can lose some weight.

Cut down on portion sizes, especially avoiding those habitual second helpings. Believe me: I was overweight and I know what it’s like to always take second helpings. That had become a habit for me. Worse yet, I consumed ALL the leftovers from my kids’ plates. If this is you, stop this habit right away as those calories can add up enough to total another meal!

Next, try to make a change to your nightly snacking habits. I’m not even going to try to tell you that you shouldn’t have anything to eat after 7 p.m. — it’s just something most of us enjoy doing, especially while watching our favorite evening television show. But instead of the chips and cookies, try air-popped or low-fat microwave popcorn. It fills the need to munch, keeping your arms and mouths busy, which is really all you’re doing when we eat while watching television. Low-fat whole-grain pretzels, fresh fruit and vegetables, and even some dill pickles do the trick too.

But these changes are not enough.  What will really help you lose the weight is exercise.

Okay, I’m reading your mind already: “I’m not exercising. Sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, jogging, lifting weights … sorry, but those things are not for me. I’d rather stay overweight.” Those were my thoughts exactly for 25 years.

But after changing all my eating habits and seeing the weight still not come off, I finally took some time to analyze why I continuously stayed morbidly obese.

The answer: I wasn’t burning off the fat on my body, simple as that. The biggest issue for me: figuring out how to burn off my existing fat without despising how I chose to do it.

That’s when I decided to start walking. This is the something else I was referring to earlier. I can help you lose your weight by convincing you to walk briskly on a daily basis. Walking really does work, especially if you are overweight. Why? Because walking is a weight-bearing activity, meaning the more you weigh, the more calories you burn!

Don’t believe me? I walked 1.5 miles for 22 minutes every day and lost 162 pounds in 16 months. It works, especially for preparing for swimsuit season! Once a size 24, I’ve been wearing a size 6 since 2002, when I hit my goal weight by walking.

You can begin walking today. It’s free and fun, you can do it anytime and anywhere, especially at the beach when the summer temperatures arrive … in your smaller swimsuit. It’s not a dream or wish anymore, it’s a reality — but only you can chose to make it one.
