10 Years of Walking: an Anniversary Celebration

I celebrated a day that is truly special to me recently. It wasn’t a very significant day to anyone else, but to me this special anniversary day marked a unique milestone. January 22, 2011 marked the 10-year anniversary of the day I decided to change my life — the day I took my first steps on my journey to lose more than 160 pounds and keep it off for good.

On this day I took some time to really think about how far I’ve come these past ten years, and how much my entire life has changed. What’s amusing is how I celebrated it: with a WALK! I figured that it only made sense, since walking was a huge part of what I was celebrating: 10 years of living healthy!

The end of Denial

And when I took that first step to begin my anniversary-day celebratory walk, I thought about that first step I took exactly ten-years ago. Back then I was a morbidly obese woman, weighing almost 300 pounds and tired of the person I’d let myself become … very, VERY tired of it! I was more ready than I’d ever been in the past. I was prepared for a change, especially after living as an obese individual for 25 years. It was time for me to end the denial and realize I was as large in real life as I appeared in photographs; that I really did weigh twice as much as I should; that I wasn’t going to lose weight by sitting on my couch and complaining. I needed to get up and MOVE!

And so I did! I made myself get up off that couch and I moved, taking a mile-and-a-half walk every single day. That was something else that I thought about on my anniversary day, all the miles of walking that I’ve done over these past ten years.

10 Years and More Than 5,000 Miles

I walk 1.5 miles every day, so if I multiply that by 3,650 days that equals 5,475 miles. Obviously this is just an estimate because several days of the year I walk much farther than 1.5 miles because of nice weather or the numerous 5K races I participate in. I’ve basically walked across the United States and back, since it is 2988 miles from San Fransisco, California (west ocean side) to Virginia Beach, Virginia (east ocean side.) It’s pretty awesome to actually see that number!

Yes, I guess you can say I’ve come pretty far – but not only in distance, but also in the person I’ve become. I learned so much these past ten years and it’s my personal goal to help others learn the same: losing weight is NOT as complex as you’ve been led to believe, it’s really quite simple IF you allow it to be.

I used to think that in order to live a healthy life, you had to live a life of boredom. Well, I was so wrong! Living life thin, healthy and physically fit is full of adventure, and the icing on the cake is the fact that I actually LOVE who I am now! And before you ask, let me just say that I didn’t celebrate my anniversary with the cake or the icing – I celebrated it with just one extremely rewarding and fulfilling walk.

Are you ready to mark the start date of your new, healthy lifestyle just like I did ten years ago? I hope so because I want us to celebrate our anniversary together next year.

  1. Congratulations, Jodi! I’m sorry I missed seeing this on your actual anniversary day. You are an inspiration and constant source of encouragement for me and countless others who finally “got it.” I celebrated 3 years in August – can’t wait until I hit year 10 too! 🙂
