It's Labor Day weekend, so here's a shout out to the working people.
Anyone who works for minimum wage. The struggling shop owners who pay their employees but not themselves. Anyone whose job it is to run into someplace on fire. Nurses. The steel-nerved construction crews working within steps of speeding traffic. Anyone who cleans toilets. Coal miners. Chicken farmers. Any kind of farmer, for that matter. Or miner. Anyone who should get the day off, but won't. Like cops. Or soldiers. Or t...

Act Now to Preserve Prevention Funding –Save prevention fund in less than a minute
The health reform law contains the support of the Prevention and Public Health Fund to invest in prevention and community health. The fund has already met preventive milestones towards tobacco cessation, physical activity, healthy eating and disease prevention.
This instrumental fund is in danger due to an amendment by Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) to divert the fund for another bill, the Small Busi...

Fuel efficiency and practicality may be driving auto sales, but the lines at a General Motors Ride & Drive event in Detroit Wednesday were longest to test drive two thirsty muscle cars: the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette.
The event, held at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s downtown Detroit headquarters*, is part of GM's Vehicle Advocate Program, which allows suppliers and vendors to take new metal for a spin. And judging by the reactions of the many Blues employees who took advant...

Question # 1: Do you have associates that aren’t as healthy as they think they are?
Despite their best intentions and regular medical visits, your employees are not as healthy as they think they are, not even close! We have never finished a single day of HealthHammer testing without finding a handful of “walking time bombs”. Providing an effective onsite health screening or know your numbers campaign is often a wakeup call for your associates to get more engaged in health care decision ...

Does employees’ poor health matter? Yes, according to a Mayo Clinic Health Solutions study. The results indicate that companies should engage their employees to better manage lifestyle risks and common chronic conditions. Examples of high costs included:

I have been trying to get my dad to see his doctor more and live healthier for more than 20 years but he wasn’t very receptive (perhaps as deserved revenge for me not listening to him as much as I should have growing up). Dad would say, “I only need to go to the doctor when I get sick and I never get sick.” Does that sound familiar to you?
The good news is that my dad is fine today. He sees his physician regularly and lives a pretty healthy lifestyle. The challenge for his company is t...

There used to be a time when applying for a job required much more than just searching the Internet and adding a corporate friend on Facebook. You would have to first fill out an application, send it in with a resume and cover letter to the Human Resources department of the company, and wait for what seemed like FOREVER to be called back for an interview (which was a totally different ball game in itself).
Yes, it is quite obvious that times have changed, considering the fact that nowadays...

When wire manufacturer AlcoTech – a long-time Traverse City Chamber member – introduced its wellness program to employees seven years ago, business leaders knew it would make an impact on the bottom line, but they didn’t realize how much it would impact their employees culturally.
“We hear employees talking about it and see the involvement– it has become a large part of our culture,” says Jennifer Ewing, director of human resources and health and safety. Ewing, who is a member of the Chamb...

Recently, I read a very inspiring article in dbusinsess covering “Metro Detroit’s Most Powerful Women in Business.” As a young woman in college who is soon to be exposed to the ups and downs of the professional realm, it is moving to know that women are being prominently recognized for their outstanding achievements in the workplace.
At one point, simply attending college to earn a degree and voting for a new president was absolutely unheard of for women. In 1991,the Glass Ceiling Commis...
