On Thursday, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan announced that beginning in 2011, they will move 3,000 workers from Southfield to the GM Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. With the move, Blue Cross is planning to reduce its long-term real estate costs, improve its corporate culture and promote efficiencies.

Blue Cross workers will take residence in the 500 and 600 towers of the Renaissance Center for at least 15 years, increasing the Renaissance Center's capacity to nearly 90%.

According the Blue Cross, the move will save more than $30 million in long-term real estate costs, reduce BCBSM's real estate footprint by more than 400,000 square feet and increase BCBSM's downtown Detroit workforce to about 6,000, making BCBSM one of Detroit's largest downtown employers.
