Six Ways to Celebrate Opening Day in Michigan

For baseball fans, nothing beats Opening Day. The crack of a bat hitting a ball, the roar of the crowd, the smell of hot dogs and the hope of a winning season makes it one of the best days of the year. While the Detroit Tigers get a lot of the fanfare, there are local baseball teams all around the state hosting fun events to kick off the season. Here are six ways to celebrate Opening Day the Michigan way:

  • West Michigan Whitecaps on April 6: If you live on the west side of the state, catch the Whitecaps in Comstock Park when they face off against the South Bend Cubs. There will be a live band, yard games and fireworks. Plus the first 1,200 fans into the stadium get a free Whitecaps winter hat.
  • Great Lakes Loons on April 6: The Loons will take on the Lansing Lugnuts in a cross-state rivalry at Midland’s Dow Diamond. Come early for the parade down Main Street and pre-game celebration.
  • Detroit Tigers on April 7: Everyone loves the Old English D! If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to celebrate Opening Day in Detroit at the stadium (with a healthy snack, obviously). No tickets? You can still join in on the fun at the Opening Day Block Party near the stadium.
  • Traverse City Beach Bums on May 19: Next month, the Beach Bums host their home opener against the Lake Erie Crushers. If you’re headed up north for an early season trip, this is a great family friendly activity!
  • Kalamazoo Growlers on May 30: This west-side team kicks off their season at the end of May against the Rockford Rivets. CMU alum, you’ll want to go if you can to support players from your alma mater.
  • Battle Creek Bombers on May 30: The Bombers play the Lakeshore Chinooks for their first home game of 2017. A bonus to the late-in-the-season start? You have a better chance for great weather!
