Belle Isle State Park events
Near the end of a busy work week, nothing sounds better than taking some much needed time to de-stress. Bikes and Yoga on Belle Isle incorporates two great exercises while getting you outside. It’s also a great way to bond with your co-workers after a day of work.
This summer, the event starts with a six-mile bike ride around the island. Then it’s time to park those bikes and take on a 45-minute yoga class, taught by an instructor from Detroit Community Yoga.
Benefits of Bikes and Yoga:
The combination of fresh air and participating in physical activity helps to reduce stress. Urmet Seepter of Good Relaxation explains that serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the body that contributes to feeling of well-being and happiness, is increased by inhaling fresh air. Seepter says that serotonin can also significantly lighten your mood, leaving you feeling more refreshed and relaxed. So, during yoga, while you are focused on your breathing, each time you take a deep breath of fresh air you are filling your body with tranquility.
Riding a bike is also therapeutic. The act of peddling works as a form of meditation as you focus on the repetitive movements. Karin Olafson of Momentum Mag discusses how cycling can improve mental wellness. She says that daily exercise like bike riding can “improve feelings of self worth, self-esteem, and even social skills.”
