Michigan embraces Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday events in Michigan
Black Friday gets all the glory as the kick-off to the holiday shopping season, but fighting crowds at the big box stores can start to feel a little exhausting (if not dangerous!). May we suggest an alternative: Small Business Saturday. It started in 2010 as a way to encourage people to shop at small, independently-owned stores (like Fustini’s, shown here, in Traverse City). The idea is that by supporting stores owned by your neighbors, you’re helping keep your local economy buzzing.
Need even more reason to embrace the day? Most towns and cities are having special Small Business Saturday events. Here are a few to whet your shopping appetite:
  • Niles: Downtown is showing how to really celebrate the holiday season with shopping specials, Santa, free carriage rides, the lighting of all the Christmas lights, and prize raffles.
And American Express cardholders can get a $10 credit on their statement by purchasing something from a participating store. Find one near you here.
