I like to consider myself a foodie, but when it comes time to choose a restaurant, I am often stuck. I get overwhelmed by the plethora of choices in Ann Arbor and typically end up picking a place that is familiar to me.
Luckily, Ann Arbor offers several opportunities for its eateries to showcase their menus in a way that doesn’t break the bank. Recognizing that the city is filled with students and self-proclaimed connoisseurs on a limited budget (like myself), many of Ann Arbor’s downtown restaurants participate in a semi-annual event called Ann Arbor Restaurant Week. During this week, over 50 Ann Arbor restaurants participate to offer specialized lunch and dinner menus at a fixed, discounted price.
The two Restaurant Weeks, usually in January and June, are arguably my favorite weeks of the year! During next week’s Restaurant Week, patrons will get the chance to sample the cuisine of high-end restaurants, like The Chop House or Gandy Dancer, without spending a tuition-sized fortune.
And for my fellow vegetarians: never fear. Ann Arbor’s restaurant scene offers a great selection of vegetarian and vegan establishments and menu options. A few of my favorites (which are still equally delicious for non-vegetarians) are Seva, Marnee Thai, What Crepe?, and Vinology. This year, I think I’d like to try Jamaican Jerk Pit, Lena, and The Melting Pot. Hopefully these selections will allow me to expand my range of possible Friday night dinner venue and allow me to call myself a more fully-fledged foodie.
So if you’re in the area (or even if you’re not), I’d highly recommend making the trip to Ann Arbor between June 9-14 to experience and enjoy the culinary offerings of the city. You’ll get a great taste of Ann Arbor and even return with some money left in your wallet.
