‘Get Real:’ No Excuses For Not Letting Walking Fall by the Wayside

“Don’t tell me to exercise. Until you know what it’s like to carry around all this extra weight, you can’t even begin to understand how hard it is to move around my home, let alone exercise. Besides, it hurts just to move at times. I’m not a big fan of fitness and good health anyways, look at me. Get real.”
Yes, this is a comment made to me recently. I did inform this woman that I once felt the same way. But the conversation didn’t stop there. My conscience and my heart won’t allow anyone to continue to feel this way about exercising … and that’s when the word “walking” was brought up. I decided to get real as she requested.

Losing the Routine

What I discovered was this woman already knew the benefits of walking, that “many years ago”weight was never an issue — she was thin and in very good health due to… you guessed it… walking.
But as the woman’s schedule filled up with daily duties including work and family, the daily walking routine fell by the wayside. It began with skipping one day of walking because of feeling “just too busy.” One day became two, two became three… and then before she knew it, a week went by and the walking stopped altogether. Her weight started to increase and her health began to deteriorate.
This is when the woman looked at me and simply said: “I need to start walking again.”

Walking as a ‘Must Do’

Okay, that was easy. I didn’t have to explain that a daily walking regimen, as simple as it sounds, is an enjoyable exercise that leads to good health. This woman already knew it. I love conversations like these!
We were soon chatting about how everyone can easily incorporate walking as part of the day. Just like taking a shower, brushing your teeth and fixing your hair, you can also include taking a brisk walk as part of your daily “must do” routine. You’ll feel better and you’ll improve your health, too.
Take it from me (and my amazing new friend): Walking truly does work wonders. We won’t tell you to exercise, but we really hope that you do. After all, you deserve to be happy and healthy, and walking daily will really help you achieve both!
What are some ways you’ve found to incorporate more walking into your daily routine?
