The Michigan legislature recently approved plans to improve transportation routes for walkers and bicyclists.
The principles behind Complete Streets foster community engagement and overall health by enabling people to exercise and enjoy Michigan’s outdoors at their convenience.
Collaborative initiatives to make Michigan more “walkable” have been underway, but Complete Streets will now require the Michigan Department of Transportation to consider road users other than motorists when planning and mapping out road construction projects.
Michigan communities seem to be jumping on board with the motion. Sault Ste. Marie is the first community north of the bridge to adopt a Complete Streets resolution.
Blue Cross Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has supported Sault Ste. Marie’s effort by providing signs along walking routes so that people can track their distances. Michigan Blue Cross also supports community challenges and other projects that encourage healthy living as part of their commitment to combat the alarming obesity epidemic.
I hope to see more communities rallying behind policies that support a healthier Michigan. How do you think Complete Streets legislation could benefit your community?
